Tasting Notes

Intensely aromatic with citrus blossom, French baguette and complex natural ferment undertones. The palate delivers power and restraint with citrus and pink grapefruit, white stone fruit, roasted nuts and mineral notes. Excellent clear-cut acidity with a lovely satin-like texture leads to an elegant and balanced finish. Complex, persistent, fine and age-worthy.

Soils And Viticulture

1888 is the ultimate Vidal Chardonnay, only made when everything is in perfect alignment - an incredible growing season combined with a truly exceptional parcel from our most outstanding vineyard. This parcel undergoes our hands-off approach; whole bunch pressing, natural fermentation and extended lees stirring. These factors result in an exquisite concentration of flavour, complexity and balance with over 10 years ageing potential.

The Kokako vineyard is planted on the old Ngaruroro riverbed in the Ohiti valley. The coarse, free-draining soil structure consists of stones within layers of silt and sand deposits. The warm season of 1,420 Growing Degree Days, low rainfall and low yields lead to the hand-picking of fruit in perfect condition showing intense flavour concentration and balanced acidity.

97 points - Exhibiting precision and poise as well as richness and complexity, this magnificent rendition shows nectarine, grapefruit, toasted almond and oatmeal characters on the nose with a seductive whiff of gun smoke. The palate is impressively concentrated, offering outstanding depth and breadth, wonderfully
enhanced by refined mouthfeel and flowing texture. It is classically structured by brilliantly pitched acidity, finishing persistent, engaging and gratifying. At its best: 2020 to 2028.
