Soils And Viticulture

2016 continued the four year run of strong Hawke's Bay vintages. Spring and early summer (December) were cooler than normal with Growing Degree Days falling below the longterm average. This cooler start to the growing season was punctuated by a very warm ripening period up to harvest - the warmest since the very hot 1998 vintage. Settled harvest conditions allowed picking decisions to be based purely on flavour and balance. Early season "green harvesting" to reduce yields and improve quality combined with meticulous vineyard management throughout the season rewarded us with ideal ripeness, flavour
development, concentration and tannin maturity.

Fruit for this wine was grown entirely in our premium Gimblett Gravels Wine GrowingDistrict vineyards where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand. These naturally free-draining, low vigour and “lean” sites combined with detailed vineyard knowledge and the ideal growing season of 2016, have produced a wine of international standard showing intensity, texture and depth of flavour.

96 points - Youthful, fruity and alluring bouquet with an intriguing textured complexity. A core of red and dark berry fruit flavours layered between finely tuned flavours of oak, firm chalky tannins and abundant acidity. There is a dry-stone mineral layer alongside toasty wood spices adding in further complexity. A very appealing wine that will age well into the late 2020s. A great food wine option with decanting is highly recommended.
