Soils And Viticulture

2016 continued the four year run of strong Hawkes Bay vintages. Spring and early summer (December) were cooler than normal with Growing Degree Days falling below the long-term average. This cooler start was punctuated by a very warm ripening period
up to harvest - the warmest since the very hot 1998 vintage. Settled harvest conditions allowed the picking decision to be based purely on flavour and balance. Early season “green harvesting” to reduce yields and improve quality, combined with meticulous
canopy management throughout the season have rewarded us with ideal ripeness, flavour development, concentration and tannin maturity.

Fruit for this wine was grown entirely in our premium Gimblett Gravels winegrowing district vineyards where the soil is made up of relatively recent alluvial deposits of gravel with varying degrees of silt and sand. These naturally free-draining, low vigour and “lean” sites combined with detailed vineyard knowledge and the ideal growing season of 2016 have produced a wine of international standard showing intensity, texture and depth of flavour.

96 points - Bright, vibrant, high energy syrah with taut violet, berry, pepper and spicy oak flavours. An elegant powerhouse that needs time to release its full potential thanks to a backbone of fine yet assertive tannins.
